Elon Musk: X to Open-Source Its Algorithm Within Seven Days, With Code Updates Every Four Weeks Thereafter

Elon Musk announced that X will publicly release the full source code for its newly updated recommendation and advertising algorithm within the next seven days, and will then refresh the codebase every four weeks. X also plans to publish comprehensive technical documentation alongside the release to help developers understand what changes were made and why.

According to Musk, the algorithm includes the logic that determines which posts are recommended to users, as well as how ads are ranked and displayed. In other words, it directly shapes what people see on the platform and in what order.

This move is being widely interpreted as a renewed push toward “algorithm transparency.” X’s predecessor, Twitter, previously open-sourced portions of its recommendation system in 2023, but the related GitHub repository has seen limited maintenance since then, with many files largely unchanged from the initial release.

Musk did not elaborate on the specific motivation behind the decision. However, X and its leadership have repeatedly faced scrutiny over how content is surfaced to users, and the company has clashed with regulators on multiple occasions regarding moderation practices and platform governance.

Regulatory pressure in Europe has been particularly intense, with investigations focusing on issues such as the spread of misinformation, perceived shortcomings in content moderation, and gaps in transparency around platform operations and algorithms.

In July, French authorities reportedly requested that X share algorithm-related information as part of an investigation into alleged bias and manipulation. At the time, X responded that it would not comply with that request.
