Wall Street is closely watching how consumer electronics companies—such as Apple and Dell—will respond, and whether they’ll be forced to raise prices or accept slimmer margins.
A Global Bottleneck: Memory Supply Can’t Keep Up
Every computing device relies on memory (RAM) for short-term data storage. This year, however, the supply of these critical components is projected to fall short of worldwide demand.
The reason is straightforward: AI hardware leaders like Nvidia, AMD, and Google require massive quantities of RAM to power their artificial intelligence chips—and they sit at the front of the line when it comes to securing components.
Today, the RAM market is effectively dominated by three manufacturers: Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics. With demand accelerating sharply, these suppliers are seeing significant benefits.
“We are seeing very strong and meaningful growth in memory demand that is well beyond our supply capability,” Micron Business Unit CEO Sumit Sadana told CNBC this week at the CES consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. “In our assessment, it’s also beyond the industry’s capability.”
A Boom for Memory Makers
Micron’s stock has climbed 247% over the past year, and the company reported that net profit nearly tripled in its most recent quarter.
Samsung also said this week it expects operating profit for its December quarter to nearly triple.
Meanwhile, SK Hynix’s shares have surged in South Korea, the company is reportedly considering a U.S. listing, and it previously noted in October that demand for its full-year 2026 RAM output had already been fully booked.
A Price Spike Like Nothing Before
Memory pricing is now moving sharply upward.
TrendForce, a Taipei-based research firm closely tracking the memory market, said this week it expects average DRAM prices to rise 50% to 55% this quarter compared with Q4 2025. TrendForce analyst Tom Hsu told CNBC that a jump of this magnitude is “unprecedented.”
The “Three-for-One” Trade-Off
Sadana explained that chip makers like Nvidia surround their GPUs with multiple blocks of ultra-fast specialized memory known as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). When new chips are showcased, the HBM stacks are often visibly arranged around the processor.
Micron supplies memory to both Nvidia and AMD, the two leading GPU manufacturers.
Nvidia’s Rubin GPU, now entering production, reportedly includes up to 288GB of next-generation HBM4 per chip, arranged across eight visible blocks above and below the processor. Rubin will be sold as part of a rack-scale system called NVL72, which—fittingly—bundles 72 of these GPUs together.
For comparison, smartphones typically ship with just 8GB or 12GB of low-power DDR memory.
But HBM is far more demanding to produce than the RAM used in laptops or phones. It is designed for extremely high bandwidth, involves complex manufacturing, and requires Micron to stack 12 to 16 memory layers into a single “cube.”
That complexity creates a tough capacity trade-off: for every 1 bit of HBM Micron manufactures, it gives up the ability to produce 3 bits of conventional memory used by other devices.
Sadana put it plainly: because of this “three-for-one” relationship, as HBM supply increases, less capacity remains for non-HBM memory in the broader market.
Why Suppliers Prefer Servers Over PCs
TrendForce’s Hsu said memory makers are increasingly prioritizing servers and HBM applications over other customers. The growth outlook is stronger, and cloud providers tend to be less price-sensitive than consumer markets.
In December, Micron said it would scale back portions of its business serving consumer PC assemblers, reallocating supply toward AI chips and server demand.
Sticker Shock Hits the Consumer Market
Some inside the tech industry have been stunned by how fast consumer RAM prices are climbing.
Juice Labs co-founder and CTO Dean Beeler shared that he recently filled a PC with 256GB of RAM—the maximum supported by most consumer motherboards—at a cost of around $300.
“Who would have guessed that just a few months later it would be around $3,000,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.
The “Memory Wall” Problem
Majestic Labs co-founder Sha Rabii, who previously worked in chip divisions at Google and Meta, said AI researchers began treating memory as a major bottleneck as early as late 2022—before OpenAI launched ChatGPT.
Early AI systems built around models like convolutional neural networks required less memory than today’s dominant large language models (LLMs).
Now, even as AI chips continue to grow faster, memory often can’t keep pace. The result: powerful GPUs can end up idling—waiting for data needed to run models.
“Your performance is limited by memory capacity and speed,” Rabii said. “If you blindly add more GPUs, you don’t necessarily gain anything.”
The AI industry refers to this constraint as the “Memory Wall.”
Sadana offered a vivid analogy: processors spend more time “twiddling their thumbs,” waiting for data to arrive.
Why More Memory Matters for Better AI
More—and faster—memory enables AI systems to run larger models, serve more users at once, and expand the “context window,” allowing chatbots to remember more of a conversation and deliver more personalized responses.
2026 Capacity Is Already Spoken For
Wall Street has been pressing companies like Apple and Dell on how they will manage memory shortages.
Hsu noted that memory now accounts for roughly 20% of a laptop’s hardware cost, up from about 10% to 18% in the first half of 2025.
Apple CFO Kevan Parekh downplayed the impact of memory prices in October. Dell, however, said in November that memory shortages are expected to lift cost bases across its product lineup, and Dell COO Jefferey Clarke indicated this could affect retail pricing.
“I don’t think it doesn’t get passed on to customers,” Clarke said. “We’ll do everything we can to reduce the impact.”
Even Nvidia—HBM’s largest customer—faces questions about whether its enormous AI-driven memory appetite could push up prices for gamers’ PCs and graphics cards. At CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was asked whether he worries gamers may resent AI if memory-driven price increases hit consoles and GPUs.
Huang said Nvidia is a major memory customer with long-standing supplier partnerships, but ultimately the industry needs to build more memory factories to meet soaring AI demand.
Sadana added that Micron can currently meet only about two-thirds of some customers’ medium-term memory requirements. While Micron is building major new facilities in Idaho and New York, those plants are not expected to come online until 2027 through 2030.
For now, Sadana was candid about the near-term reality:
“Our 2026 capacity is sold out.”
