Kuai Technology reported on January 11 that CCTV’s program “Lijian” recently offered a detailed look at the fast-evolving “Nantianmen Plan”—a forward-looking concept that, as experts emphasized, is becoming increasingly grounded in real-world technological trajectories. In the experts’ view, many of the cutting-edge capabilities embedded in these designs are “a matter of time” rather than a question of possibility.
The newly revealed Nantianmen Plan features several conceptual aerospace combat platforms, including the 100,000-ton-class “Luan Niao” space–aircraft carrier, designed to operate alongside the “Xuan Nü” unmanned space–air fighter, as well as the “Bai Di” space–air fighter and the “Zi Huo” universal vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) platform.
According to the report, these concept craft differ markedly from today’s modern fighter aircraft—across aerodynamics, propulsion concepts, flight profiles, and weapon-carrying approaches—presenting a vision that looks decisively “sci-fi,” but is built around a system of emerging ideas and technologies.
“Luan Niao”: A 100,000-Ton-Class Space–Air Aircraft Carrier Concept
Among the most eye-catching designs is the “Luan Niao”—a conceptual space–aircraft carrier described as 242 meters long with a 684-meter wingspan, and a maximum takeoff weight of 120,000 tons. In the concept framework, it could carry up to 88 “Xuan Nü” unmanned space–air fighters, positioning it as a mothership-like platform for high-end aerial and near-space operations.
“Xuan Nü”: An Unmanned Space–Air Air-Superiority Fighter Concept
In concept form, “Xuan Nü” is portrayed as an unmanned air-superiority fighter. Its design is visually striking, featuring large hollow structures on both sides of the fuselage described as an “intermediate particle ring-flow generator,” paired with forward-swept wings—a configuration intended to signal extreme maneuverability and futuristic propulsion thinking.
The report describes the craft as integrating high agility, advanced stealth, and intelligent/autonomous capabilities. As a space–air fighter concept, it is also envisioned to operate both within the atmosphere and beyond it, with proposed weapon options including particle-acceleration cannon concepts and hypersonic missiles, aligned with the broader theme of air–space integrated combat.
“Bai Di”: A High-Profile Concept Upgraded Again
The “Bai Di” space–air fighter concept drew major attention when a 1:1 scale model appeared at the 2024 China Airshow, and the latest Nantianmen Plan reveal describes further conceptual upgrades and iteration beyond that earlier generation.
One of the most notable changes highlighted is in the aircraft’s aerodynamic shaping, especially the vertical tail configuration. In prior concepts, “Bai Di” featured variable-sweep wing elements; in the updated concept, the vertical tail surfaces adopt a drooping aerodynamic profile. The concept also enlarges the internal weapons bay, suggesting increased payload capacity, while the avionics architecture is portrayed as upgraded to better support near-space and air–space boundary operations.
Within the Nantianmen framework, “Bai Di” is presented as a core, frontline platform—a central “mainstay” craft around which broader capabilities could be organized.
The report also describes “Bai Di” as combining a stealth-focused form with complex variable-geometry wing structures, giving it a look likened to a flying “Transformer.” Concept features include full-spectrum stealth, flexible switching between manned and unmanned modes, drone command-and-control, and an adaptive engine approach. It is also framed as modular, able to swap onboard mission modules to rapidly shift operational roles, while the variable-wing structure would theoretically allow real-time aerodynamic adjustments based on altitude, speed, and flight attitude.
“Zi Huo”: A Universal VTOL Platform With Multi-Environment Ambitions
Another newly showcased platform is the “Zi Huo” universal VTOL concept, presented with a purple metallic sheen—an aesthetic touch described as reflecting a distinctly Chinese romanticism, evoking the phrase “purple qi from the east.”
With an angular, futuristic body design, a force-field duct concept, and tilt-capable power pods, “Zi Huo” is described as targeting a planned cruising speed of 700 to 800 km/h. The concept also emphasizes adaptability to a range of environments, including low-gravity and thin-atmosphere conditions.
The report adds that “Zi Huo” is envisioned to support both manned and unmanned operations, enabling autonomous flight and formation flight. In high-risk scenarios, it could theoretically execute missions such as rescue operations and logistics/material delivery, underscoring multi-mission flexibility.
A Concept Today, A Direction for Tomorrow
While the Nantianmen Plan remains in the concept stage, the program argues that its value lies in the forward-looking principles embedded within the designs—ideas such as adaptive morphing structures and integrated air–space operations—which could help shape future directions in aerospace development.
Experts quoted in the program characterize the Nantianmen Plan as a future-oriented innovation vision, noting that in an era of rapid iteration, the biggest barrier on the road ahead may not be technology itself, but mindset and imagination.
In the program’s framing, the Nantianmen Plan bundles a wide range of frontier capabilities—such as hypersonic flight, dual-mode air–space propulsion concepts, metamaterial-enabled stealth, adaptive aircraft configurations, unmanned autonomous swarm coordination, AI-augmented decision-making, directed-energy weapon concepts, and air–space round-trip operations—into a system vision carried by science-fiction-like combat aircraft.
Ultimately, the message is that these frontier technologies are not simply aspirational symbols of future air–space dominance, but also represent areas where breakthroughs are actively pursued to strengthen national aerospace security. As the experts concluded, it’s not a question of whether these technologies can be realized—but which will arrive first, and when the rest will follow.
