Lakers and Nets Trade Talks Resurface: Claxton and Michael Porter Jr. Emerge as Key Targets

On January 21, NBA reporter Matt Moore revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers may once again explore trade opportunities with the Brooklyn Nets as the deadline approaches, with Nic Claxton and Michael Porter Jr. emerging as potential targets.
Moore noted that the two franchises have maintained consistent communication over the past two seasons, including a previous deal involving Dorian Finney-Smith. That established relationship could pave the way for another transaction.
From a cost perspective, Claxton represents the more manageable option. Acquiring him would likely allow the Lakers to preserve future assets while adding a defensive-minded center whose overall impact rivals that of current starter Deandre Ayton.
Porter Jr., however, carries significantly greater upside. Since joining Brooklyn, he has delivered a breakout campaign, becoming one of the most appealing players on the trade market. His ability to alter game flow makes him an especially intriguing target for a Lakers team seeking offensive versatility.
After years as a reliable role player in Denver, Porter has flourished in an expanded role with the Nets, averaging 25.7 points per game—numbers that put him firmly in All-Star consideration.
The Lakers’ most glaring weakness remains on the wing, and Porter fits that need perfectly. He can thrive as a secondary option alongside star teammates or step into a primary scoring role when injuries strike. His growth as a playmaker and leader further elevates his value beyond pure scoring.
With few elite talents available at the deadline, Porter’s appeal only grows.
As for the mechanics of a deal, reports suggest the Lakers are unwilling to move Austin Reaves before the deadline, preferring to secure him long-term in the offseason. Brooklyn, meanwhile, is believed to prioritize unprotected first-round picks in any deal involving Porter or Claxton.
To match salaries, players such as Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent, and Maxi Kleber could be included, with at least three required to complete a Porter-centered trade.
Ultimately, the Lakers must decide whether sacrificing future draft capital is a price worth paying for a potential franchise-altering acquisition.
