IT Home reported on January 24 that research firm Counterpoint said this week it expects TSMC to reduce mature-node capacity at its 12-inch Fab 14 facility in Tainan over the next three years.

According to Counterpoint’s projection, the cut could reach 15%–20%, translating into a monthly reduction of roughly 50,000 wafers.

Counterpoint noted that the move is aimed at improving utilization for mature process capacity—particularly in the 40–90nm range, where utilization is currently around 80%—while freeing up resources for faster expansion in advanced packaging.

At the same time, TSMC is expected to stay agile by leveraging its global manufacturing footprint—such as Japan’s JASM Fab 23 and Germany’s ESMC Fab 24—along with capacity from its investee Vanguard International Semiconductor, to continue meeting ongoing customer demand.
