(KUALA LUMPUR, 27th) As Malaysian equities rallied sharply and climbed to a new high not seen in over seven years, retail investors continued to cash out. On Jan 26, they recorded net selling of more than RM500 million—an unusually large single-day outflow.
Latest Bursa Malaysia data show retail investors were the market’s only net sellers yesterday, with net sales totaling RM526 million. In contrast, foreign investors and local institutions were net buyers, purchasing RM135 million and RM391 million worth of shares respectively.
Data also indicate retail investors have set three notable selling records:
- They have been net sellers for 12 consecutive trading sessions, from Jan 9 to Jan 26;
- The RM526 million net sell on Jan 26 was the largest single-day outflow during this selling wave;
- Year-to-date, retail investors’ cumulative net selling has exceeded RM2.0 billion, reaching RM2.185 billion.
