Meta Lays Off Thousands at Reality Labs — Is the VR Winter Here?

On January 27, Meta’s Reality Labs announced a major layoff, cutting 10% of its workforce, nearly 1,000 positions, mostly in VR projects including Quest VR headsets and the virtual social platform Horizon Worlds. Industry insiders describe the current VR climate as a “winter.”
Over the past decade, Meta has been a leading driver of the global VR industry. It acquired Oculus in 2014 and rebranded as Meta in 2021, making the “metaverse” its strategic core. Yet since late 2020, Reality Labs has accumulated losses exceeding $70 billion (~RMB 487 billion), forcing Meta to reduce VR investments and shift resources toward AI and smart glasses.
From Metaverse Core to Strategic Downgrade
Meta is reallocating Reality Labs resources to AI and wearable devices, such as the Meta Ray-Ban Display smart glasses. This signals that VR is no longer Meta’s “sole focus,” and developers are already feeling the chill in the industry.
Developers Feel the Chill
Jessica Young, a long-time Horizon Worlds creator, said, “It feels like VR has entered a winter.” Staff reductions and studio closures have squeezed many small and medium developers. IDC data shows VR and MR headset shipments are expected to drop 42.8% in 2025, while AI smart glasses shipments are projected to surge 211.2%.
VR Shifts to Enterprise Markets
Despite a slow consumer market, VR finds opportunities in enterprise applications. Apple’s Vision Pro excels in immersive training, remote collaboration, and design. Samsung and Valve are launching next-gen XR devices. IDC notes that enterprise VR is “growing slowly but directionally clear,” showing strong ROI in manufacturing, healthcare, education, and industrial training.
Conclusion
VR may no longer be a hot consumer trend, but its technology remains valuable. As the hype fades, VR is returning to reality, moving toward stable, long-term growth.
