Paying for “Simplicity”: The Unexpected Comeback of iPhone 4S

In a market flooded with ever-evolving smartphones, Apple’s iPhone 4S, launched 15 years ago, has unexpectedly regained popularity in 2026. On Pinduoduo, it sold over 3,000 units in 30 days, with more than 28,000 group orders.

As the last Apple device with a 3.5-inch Retina display, the iPhone 4S carries nostalgic value for Millennials and Gen Z. Though it only supports iOS 7 and cannot run modern apps like WeChat or QQ, its retro appeal makes it a coveted item among young users.

The resurgence is driven by two main factors:

  1. Nostalgic modifications: Sellers preload classic games such as Fruit Ninja and Where’s My Water?, and even port early AAA titles, complemented by 2TB game libraries.
  2. Affordability: Second-hand prices on Pinduoduo start as low as ¥45–53, making it highly cost-effective compared to new iPhones priced in the thousands, appealing to users seeking simplicity and retro experiences.

Psychologically, the iPhone 4S evokes memories and emotions. For Gen Z, it offers a connection to a simpler, more authentic era. Parents also use it as a backup or kids’ phone, limiting access to complex modern features. Some repurpose it as a car music player or smart home controller, exploring its residual value.

This trend is not isolated. Devices like Nokia 808 and Canon IXUS130 have also seen renewed interest. Experts note that while mainstream products chase specs and AI-driven features, some users increasingly value “imperfection” and simplicity, turning retro devices into cultural icons. As one expert said: “The ‘emotional value’ of iPhone 4S makes people willing to pay—it doesn’t solve all problems but offers a pause in fast-paced life.”
