The cost of ruining a girl’s reputation has never been lower: a single photo and less than three seconds is enough for perpetrators to use AI to superimpose her face onto explicit content. By contrast, seeking justice is full of obstacles—legal fees, notarization, audio-video authentication—often totaling thousands of dollars. Technical barriers and anonymous accounts make tracing the offenders nearly impossible.

Between 2024 and 2025, cases like this surged. College student Xiaoshi and young professional Xuya found themselves victims of AI face-swapping, sometimes by acquaintances, sometimes by strangers. The manipulated images spread across social networks, profoundly impacting their mental well-being and daily lives.

Faced with cross-border IPs, encrypted platforms, and expensive evidence collection, most victims remain silent. Even when reporting to authorities, many hit a “cotton wall”—limited police resources, vague legal definitions, and complex civil and criminal procedures.

A few resilient women managed to gather evidence and hold their offenders accountable, forcing apologies or compensation, but such outcomes are rare. The majority of women still face the harsh reality of tech-enabled harassment with limited recourse.

Experts warn that as AI face-swapping technology becomes widespread, any woman who posts photos online could potentially be targeted. Beyond legal and technical tools, societal support, mental health assistance, and public education are crucial in protecting women’s rights.
