China’s basketball officiating system is once again under the spotlight

Following the release of the 2026–2027 certified technical officials list by the Chinese Basketball Association, it was confirmed that several high-profile referees, including Yan Jun, no longer hold active international-level status — sparking widespread discussion.

For years, Chinese basketball referees — particularly those officiating crucial CBA games — have faced intense scrutiny. Figures like Yan Jun have frequently found themselves at the center of controversy, with passionate fan bases questioning critical calls in high-stakes matchups. Public perception of officiating standards has long been a sensitive topic.

Speculation quickly emerged that the loss of international credentials may have stemmed from failing FIBA assessments. However, the reality is more procedural than dramatic: Yan Jun and others transitioned to non-active international status due to age regulations, not performance deficiencies. It represents a natural generational shift rather than a disqualification.

That said, the limited presence of Chinese referees on major continental and global stages remains a structural challenge. Language proficiency, international exposure, and long-term development mechanisms have all restricted broader representation abroad.

At present, only Sun Jian remains as an active international-level referee, earning recognition from the Asian basketball governing body and officiating at last year’s Asia Cup — marking him as a promising new face in Chinese officiating.

During the tenure of Yao Ming as president of the Chinese Basketball Association, international referee relations were not a major strategic priority. Controversial officiating narratives during the 2019 home FIBA World Cup, along with later qualification tournaments, fueled ongoing debate about China’s influence within officiating circles.

In contrast, Japan’s basketball federation has been widely viewed as more proactive in referee diplomacy, particularly during home qualification windows, which contributed to securing their Olympic berth.

Since Guo Zhenming assumed leadership, renewed emphasis has been placed on strengthening ties with Asian officiating authorities. The shift appeared to yield results at last year’s Asia Cup, where China’s men’s team encountered a comparatively balanced officiating environment. Observers noted that West Asian referees maintained a steadier standard — an important factor in China’s eventual runner-up finish.

Officiating is never merely about individual calls. It reflects system-building, international engagement, and institutional credibility. For Chinese basketball to elevate its global competitiveness, referee development and international integration will remain critical components of the bigger picture.
