Shanghai Port have made a decisive late move, announcing the loan signing of Ampem and completing their six-foreign-player quota for the season
The addition signals not just reinforcement, but a potential tactical evolution under head coach Kevin Muscat.
Previously structured around a three-foreign-midfielder core, Shanghai Port now appear to be shifting emphasis toward attacking dynamism. With Leonardo, Vital, Jean-Claude, Gabriel, and Melendo already in place, Ampem’s arrival—particularly alongside Gabriel—points to a faster, more transition-oriented system.
A 4-3-3 formation built on speed, width, and aggressive pressing seems increasingly likely. The reasoning is practical: injuries to Leonardo and Wu Lei have reduced attacking efficiency, while Gabriel’s explosiveness last season highlighted the value of pace-driven football.
However, questions remain. Ampem’s recent league statistics are modest, and Melendo’s orchestration in midfield was instrumental in last season’s comeback title run. Transitioning from a midfield-heavy foreign-player setup to a forward-oriented trio could come at the expense of ball control and tempo management.
With all six foreign-player slots now filled, Shanghai Port cannot register additional overseas reinforcements in the summer window. Immediate chemistry will therefore be essential. The upcoming Super Cup clash against Beijing Guoan will serve as an early indicator of whether Muscat’s bold recalibration delivers the desired impact.
Projected Starting XI
Goalkeeper: Yan Junling
Defense: Yang Xi (Wang Shenchao), Wumiti Jiang, Jiang Guangtai, Li Shuai
Midfield: Vital, Jean-Claude, Lu Yongtao
Attack: Gabriel, An Yongjia (Leonardo), Ampem
Speed is the statement—results will provide the verdict.
