(Hollywood, March 28) Veteran actor James Tolkan, best known for his roles in Top Gun and the Back to the Future trilogy, has passed away on March 26 in Saranac Lake, New York, at the age of 94. His death was confirmed by a family spokesperson and later announced by the official Back to the Future platform as well as producer Bob Gale.

Tolkan enjoyed a career spanning over five decades across both television and film. He began his acting journey in 1960 with the television series Naked City, while his final screen appearance was in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk.

He is most widely recognized for his portrayal of the strict school principal Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy. He also appeared in the third installment as the character’s ancestor, further cementing his legacy with audiences.

In addition, Tolkan played Commander “Stinger” in Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott, alongside major stars including Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan.

His extensive body of work also includes films such as WarGames and The Amityville Horror, as well as television appearances in popular series like The Wonder Years, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Born on June 20, 1931, in Michigan, USA, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing higher education at Coe College and University of Iowa. He later moved to New York to study acting at the prestigious The Actors Studio, where he trained under renowned instructors Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
