Syed Saddiq and Bella’s engagement mocked online — Rasheda fires back: “Women are not commodities!”

(Kuala Lumpur, March 29) Malaysian politician Syed Saddiq, often dubbed the “nation’s heartthrob,” announced on March 28 his engagement to popular local singer-actress Bella Astillah, marking a new chapter in their lives. The announcement, accompanied by a heartfelt proposal video shared on social media, quickly became a trending topic nationwide.

However, the joyful news was overshadowed by insensitive online remarks. Bella, who had previously gone through a highly publicized divorce, became the target of derogatory comments such as “second-hand car” and “buy one get two.” In response, RTM Chinese news anchor Rasyidah took to social media to defend her, expressing sympathy and firmly stating: “Women are not commodities, nor are they accessories.”

In her post, Rasyidah congratulated the couple while calling out toxic online behavior. She highlighted the emotional hardships Bella endured in her past marriage, including repeated infidelity by her former partner involving individuals close to her. Despite her efforts to salvage the relationship, it ultimately failed to bring the respect and loyalty she deserved.

Rasyidah praised Bella for her resilience—rising above adversity, reclaiming her self-worth, and finding a partner who values and protects her. She emphasized that Syed Saddiq’s actions and commitment reflect genuine care not only for Bella but also for her loved ones.

Strongly condemning comments that demean women based on their past or personal circumstances, Rasyidah urged the public to reflect on their words: “A woman’s strength, independence, and dignity should never be diminished.”

Quoting Mayday frontman Ashin—“Every girl has her own name”—she reinforced the message that women should never be objectified or reduced to labels. She concluded by wishing the couple a lifetime of happiness together.
