(Beijing, March 30) Chinese singer Shan Yichun has come under scrutiny after performing Li Ronghao’s hit song Li Bai without authorization at a recent concert, sparking a growing copyright controversy.
Following Li Ronghao’s public criticism, Shan issued an apology, admitting her mistake and expressing willingness to compensate. However, Li later responded again, revealing that his family had been subjected to online abuse, reigniting public debate.
In her statement, Shan acknowledged that the performance lacked proper authorization and pledged to personally bear all copyright fees and compensation. She also announced that she would permanently stop performing the song.
She explained that concert copyright matters are typically handled by organizers, and due to trust, she did not independently verify the authorization details. “I must take responsibility for failing to personally check the licensing documents,” she wrote, adding that the mistake rests solely with her.
To address the issue, Shan has removed related promotional content, halted all future performances of the song, and established a copyright review team to strengthen internal processes.
In response, Li Ronghao stated that he had received numerous malicious messages, some even targeting his family. “If the situation stops escalating and the attacks cease, I will not bring this up again. However, I reserve the right to pursue legal action depending on public developments.”
He also rejected Shan’s offer of compensation, saying: “I don’t need money. If I wanted that, I would have granted permission from the beginning.”
Li emphasized that his stance is rooted in protecting the integrity of original works and copyright.
The controversy stems from the fact that Shan’s team had previously applied for permission to perform Li Bai, but the request was explicitly denied. Despite this, she went ahead with the performance during a Shenzhen concert.
Li further noted that he had previously tolerated Shan’s reinterpretation of the song on Singer 2025, but this unauthorized performance crossed the line.
