Argentinian football star Lionel Messi has filed a lawsuit in New York targeting sellers on platforms such as Temu, Shein, and Walmart for allegedly selling counterfeit products using his name and branding.
Rather than suing the platforms, Messi is focusing on individual sellers who exploit his global popularity to market unauthorized merchandise, including apparel, footwear, and accessories.
The lawsuit states that Messi registered his trademarks in the U.S. in 2016 and maintains global licensing rights. Despite being based overseas, the sellers are considered under U.S. jurisdiction due to their continued sales into the American market.
The case highlights a broader issue in cross-border e-commerce, where counterfeit goods circulate rapidly and sellers evade regulation through changing accounts and identities.
