At 77, veteran film figure Charles Heung recently shared insights into his marriage with his 67-year-old wife, Tiffany Chen. He revealed that the couple has been sleeping in separate rooms for over a decade—not due to relationship issues, but as a practical adjustment to differences in lifestyle and aging.
Heung explained that he has become highly sensitive to noise over the years, with his sleep quality declining after the age of 50. Even the slightest sound can wake him, leading him to adopt an early and disciplined sleep routine, typically going to bed before 11 p.m. In contrast, his wife prefers staying up late watching shows or using her phone, creating a clear mismatch in their schedules.
Addressing public perceptions, Heung dismissed the idea that couples must sleep together, calling it a mindset more common among younger people. “As you get older, you naturally begin to understand the benefits of sleeping separately,” he noted.
He further emphasized that maintaining personal space can reduce friction and support a more relaxed, long-lasting relationship. Despite sleeping separately, the couple continues to work together, attend events, and maintain frequent interaction, with their bond remaining strong. He also suggested that for couples with differing routines, separate sleeping arrangements later in life may help sustain comfort and stability in marriage.
