(Beijing, April 18) Chinese actress Zhang Ruonan has recently come under scrutiny after behind-the-scenes footage from her new drama “I Want to Hide You and Time” circulated online, pushing the topic to the top of Weibo’s entertainment trending list.

In the leaked clips, Zhang appeared to turn her head in response to off-set calls after the director shouted “Action,” which allegedly interrupted co-star Wang Anyu and forced a retake. Additional claims about repeated countdown cues on set were interpreted by some as signs of multiple retakes, sparking debate over professionalism and focus.

As the discussion intensified, Zhang’s studio responded on April 17 via official Weibo, publicly addressing the production team and questioning the narrative. The post quickly gained traction, accumulating thousands of comments and shares within a short time.

Fans, however, offered alternative explanations, suggesting that external disturbances were the main cause. According to them, individuals outside the production repeatedly called out Zhang’s name, leading her to mistakenly believe it was a cue from staff. Some also questioned the intent behind the initial video release, speculating possible agenda-setting.

The production team later issued a statement clarifying that all cast and crew have maintained a professional and dedicated approach since filming began. Regarding the controversial clip, they explained it was taken during a rehearsal phase in a residential area, where non-crew individuals suddenly shouted and recorded videos, startling the actor and causing a misunderstanding.

Public opinion remains divided—while some question professional conduct, others attribute the situation to environmental interference beyond the actor’s control.

Zhang Ruonan, who did not come from a formal acting background, studied graphic design and began her career as a model before gaining recognition through the film Cry Me a Sad River. In recent years, she has built a steady portfolio with dramas such as Love The Way You Are and Light Chaser Rescue, and gained further popularity with Hidden Love, establishing herself as a rising star.
