Only 2 of China’s 11 Players Remain! Zhao Xintong on Eliminating Ding Junhui: “He Wasn’t in Form and Gave Me the Opportunity”

On April 26, Zhao Xintong defeated Ding Junhui 13–9 in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Snooker Championship, advancing confidently to the quarterfinals. Despite the strong win, Zhao remained humble, attributing his victory partly to “luck.”

As the defending champion, Zhao entered the tournament as one of the favorites. He started slowly, drawing 4–4 in the first session, but raised his level significantly in the following sessions, showcasing his attacking strength to secure the match.

Facing his idol, Zhao described the match as “very special,” noting the intense pressure, especially in the closing frames. “I was fortunate to win,” he said.

He also expressed sympathy for Ding, suggesting his opponent did not perform at his best, which created scoring opportunities. At the same time, Zhao admitted he himself struggled under pressure, emphasizing the difference compared to last year and the weight of expectations from Chinese fans.

Looking ahead, Zhao will face Shaun Murphy in the quarterfinals. Murphy has already eliminated two Chinese players. Zhao, however, remains composed: “He’s a great player. I know his level well, and I’ll just focus on enjoying the match.” Notably, Zhao has won their last two encounters.

With Ding eliminated, only Zhao and Wu Yize remain among the 11 Chinese players who entered the main draw.
