KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 – TVB actor Ng Wai Ho has surprised audiences by shedding his wholesome image to play one of his darkest roles yet in the hit crime anthology A Sin Beyond. Inspired by real-life criminal cases, the series explores the darkest side of human nature, with Ng portraying the ruthless online content creator "Director Cha" (Ngai Ka Yan) in the Dangerous Game storyline.
The character builds his online fame through dangerous prank videos, sacrificing morality in pursuit of views, donations and internet fame. He manipulates colleagues, exploits those around him and shows no remorse even when his stunts leave victims seriously injured. His obsession with popularity ultimately leads to a fatal live-stream challenge that costs him his own life.
Ng said he immediately fell in love with the role because it allowed him to portray an unapologetically selfish and manipulative villain for the first time.
"What attracted me most was that he's a truly despicable character. I've never had the chance to play someone like this before, so I'm grateful the producer trusted me with the role," he said.
Instead of studying other fictional villains, Ng drew inspiration from people he had encountered in real life—those who appear friendly on the surface but secretly manipulate or undermine others.
Veteran actress Law Koon Lan also stars in the drama as Qing Jie, a cleaner who later discovers that Director Cha is responsible for her daughter's paralysis, pushing her to the brink of revenge.
Although the two shared relatively few direct scenes, Ng described working alongside Law as an honour. He said he learned a great deal simply by observing her communication with the director and crew on set.
After filming wrapped, Ng asked the veteran actress for feedback on his performance. Her response—that he handled the character well—gave him tremendous confidence and reassurance.
Reflecting on the role, Ng said Director Cha never believes he is doing anything wrong.
"From his perspective, everything he does is to get what he wants. When people stand in his way, he becomes angry and aggressive. That's what makes him such an interesting character."
