One Final, One Fate! Manchester United’s Do-or-Die Showdown: Europa League Title Worth £100M – No One Can Afford to Lose
In the Europa League semifinals, Manchester United eliminated Athletic Bilbao, while Tottenham Hotspur knocked out Bodø/Glimt, setting up an all-English final. The match is scheduled for 3:00 a.m. (Beijing time) on May 22 at the new San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.
For both Manchester United and Tottenham, this final is a battle of fate. It will define the success or failure of their seasons in one game. Beyond the glory of lifting the trophy, there’s enormous financial value at stake. Using Manchester United as an example, here’s how valuable this final truly is:
[Champions League Prize Money: Minimum £65M]
Last season, United finished last in their UCL group, taking home only £52M in prize money. Starting this season, the Champions League has adopted a new format with higher payouts. All 36 teams play at least 8 matches.
United, with a UEFA coefficient ranking around 12th, would receive around £24M just from ranking bonuses, plus £16M as a participation fee—already totaling £40M. Including performance bonuses (e.g., £1.8M per group stage win), even if they don't advance far, they would earn at least £65M—just like Manchester City did this season without reaching the Round of 16.
[Matchday Revenue: Minimum £24M]
Under the new UCL format, each club will have at least 4 home games. Based on Manchester United's 2024–25 financials, Old Trafford brings in an average of £5.2M per matchday. With a 5% increase in ticket prices and higher UCL ticket demand, that figure is projected to be around £6M per match.
With at least 4 home games, that’s £24M minimum. Should United reach the knockout stages, they could host up to 8 matches—each adding another £6M plus advancement bonuses.
[Sponsorship Bonuses: £10M at Risk]
According to their contract with Adidas, if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League in the 2025 season, Adidas will deduct £10M from the sponsorship deal.
This is just one clause. Other sponsors like Qualcomm (£60M/year front sponsor), DXC (£20M/year sleeve sponsor), and Tezos (£20M/year training kit sponsor) may have similar “Champions League clauses,” though this has not been confirmed.
[Tottenham Can’t Afford to Lose Either: Glory or Disaster]
It’s not just United—Tottenham are also under pressure. Manager Ange Postecoglou said, “In my second year, I always win something.” The Europa League is Spurs’ last shot: either they win the trophy and grab a Champions League spot worth £100M, or they finish 16th in the Premier League with no silverware. For Postecoglou, it’s either a moment of glory—or the end.
