Apple's 20th Anniversary iPhone May Feature Mobile HBM Memory, Promising Major AI Performance Leap

[IT Home, May 14] According to South Korean outlet ETNews, Apple is planning a commemorative iPhone to mark the product’s 20th anniversary and is exploring the integration of a cutting-edge technology — Mobile High Bandwidth Memory (Mobile HBM) — to significantly boost AI capabilities.

🔧 What is Mobile HBM?
Mobile HBM is a high-performance type of DRAM that vertically stacks memory chips using Through-Silicon Via (TSV) technology for ultra-fast data connections. While currently used in AI servers and GPUs, Apple is now researching how to adapt it for mobile use — aiming to surpass the limitations of conventional LPDDR in bandwidth and energy efficiency.

📱 Why Use Mobile HBM?
Compared to traditional memory, Mobile HBM offers extremely high data throughput while keeping power consumption low and reducing physical chip size. Apple intends to pair it with its GPU unit to enable on-device processing of large AI models like LLMs and advanced vision tasks — all without added power drain or latency.

🤝 Who's Involved?
Apple has reportedly initiated talks with leading chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, both of whom are developing Mobile HBM technologies:

  • Samsung is working on a packaging method called Vertical Cu-post Stack (VCS);
  • SK Hynix is developing Vertical wire Fan-Out (VFO);
    Both aim for mass production after 2026.

Technical Challenges:

  • High Costs: Mobile HBM is significantly more expensive to produce than current LPDDR.
  • Thermal Management: Its 3D-stacked design poses major heat dissipation issues in slim devices like the iPhone.
  • Complex Manufacturing: TSV technology requires extreme precision and high packaging yields.

🔮 Looking Ahead:
ETNews also reports that the 2027 iPhone may feature a truly bezel-less display with screen edges wrapping around all four sides. With Mobile HBM and advanced on-device AI, Apple is clearly laying the groundwork for the next generation of "superphones."
