Lei Jun Announces Xiaomi’s Chipmaking: Xuanjie O1 Chip to Launch in May, Sparking New Wave in Domestic Mobile Chip Industry

On the evening of May 15, Lei Jun officially announced that Xiaomi’s self-developed mobile SoC chip, “Xuanjie O1,” will be officially released in late May. Although key details such as process technology and performance parameters remain tightly confidential, market rumors suggest that this chip will be featured in Xiaomi’s 15th anniversary flagship model, the 15S Pro.

This marks Xiaomi’s return to the main mobile chip arena eight years after its first self-developed chip, the Surge S1, which was released in 2017 as a trial. Industry insiders point out that this announcement carries strategic significance comparable to Xiaomi’s entry into the automobile industry — it is both a “battle for recognition” of technical strength and a crucial step to reduce reliance on supply chains.

Looking back at Xiaomi’s chipmaking journey, it resembles a turbulent “technology marathon.” Xiaomi established Pinecone Electronics in 2014 to enter the main chip track, and launched its first product, the Surge S1, in 2017. This mid-range chip, manufactured on TSMC’s 28nm process, was used in the Xiaomi 5C. However, limited by baseband technology shortcomings and outdated process technology, the Surge S1 had a lukewarm market response. The subsequent Surge S2 chip development stalled, leading Xiaomi to temporarily pause its main chip development plans.

Nevertheless, Xiaomi never gave up on its “chipmaking dream.” Over the following years, Pinecone Electronics shifted focus to niche fields such as imaging and fast charging chips, launching the Surge C series imaging chips and Surge P series fast charging chips, gradually accumulating technical expertise. In 2023, Lei Jun pledged a 100 billion yuan investment in R&D over five years, signaling Xiaomi’s intent to return from peripheral accessories to the core battlefield of chips.

Regarding industry speculation about the Xuanjie O1, Xiaomi has not disclosed further details. However, Lei Jun stated last year, “Xiaomi’s goal for the next decade is to become a leader in hardcore technology,” emphasizing heavy investment in underlying core technologies. Supply chain insiders reveal that the Xuanjie O1 will most likely use advanced process technology and target the high-end market. Launching it on the 15th anniversary flagship model also shows Xiaomi’s strong confidence and determination to “win a comeback battle.”

Xiaomi’s return to self-developed SoC chips is expected to shake up the entire smartphone industry. Domestic phone manufacturers have long been dependent on chip giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek. If Xiaomi achieves a technological breakthrough, it could not only reduce costs but also seize control over product definition. After Huawei’s Kirin chips faced setbacks, a gap appeared in the high-end domestic chip market. The Xuanjie O1 is expected to join forces with chip initiatives from brands like vivo and OPPO to drive a collective breakthrough for “China’s chips.”

However, there are cautious voices in the industry. A chip engineer candidly stated, “The difficulty of designing and mass-producing a main chip far exceeds that of imaging or charging chips. Xiaomi will need to face multiple challenges including architecture, power consumption, and baseband.” Regardless, Lei Jun’s all-in determination for independent chip development is now clear, and Xiaomi is ready to go all out in the arena of hardcore technology.
