JPMorgan CEO Dimon Warns: US Bond Market May Face “Collapse” – Just a Matter of Time
On Friday, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon issued a rare and stern warning, saying the US bond market, under the strain of the Federal Reserve and government’s “massive overspending and quantitative easing,” will eventually collapse—it’s just a question of when.
Dimon stated bluntly, “I’ve already warned regulators that the US bond market will have problems. When it happens, you’ll all panic, but I won’t. We’ll be fine. I just don’t know if it will be in 6 months or 6 years.”
He stressed the need for the US to change its debt trajectory and improve market-making capacity, warning that a crisis might be needed to “wake everyone up.”
Dimon’s comments underscore Wall Street’s growing concern about the level of US government debt. Currently, Congress is reviewing Trump’s “Big and Beautiful” budget bill, expected to add $3.8 trillion to the deficit over the next decade and push the US debt-to-GDP ratio above its WWII peak. The bill has passed the House and is under Senate review.
Dimon also noted that escalating geopolitical tensions, trade wars, and rising global debt levels are changing the “tectonic plates” of the world economy. Over the past decade, foreign demand for US Treasuries has steadily declined, with Trump’s tariffs accelerating the trend. The 30-year US Treasury yield has climbed from just over 4% earlier this year to around 5% now.
However, Goldman Sachs offered a more optimistic view. Lindsay Rosner, head of multi-sector investing at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, said that despite Moody’s downgrade of US Treasuries’ credit rating, foreign investors are unlikely to abandon the market due to the lack of alternatives. “At the end of the day, the US market has a depth and breadth unmatched by any other,” Rosner said, noting that yield differentials and hedging options still make Treasuries attractive.
Key Takeaways
🔍 Core Insight
Dimon’s warning highlights worries about the US government’s “borrow and spend” model: high deficits, rising long-term yields, and growing debt burdens.
Geopolitical risks and trade tensions are compounding these concerns, prompting global investors to reconsider Treasuries’ allure.
Goldman’s optimism hinges on the belief in Treasuries’ “irreplaceable” status: despite rising risks, no other AAA asset pool matches its scale, ensuring continued foreign inflows.
🔍 Future Outlook
Will the US bond market see the “collapse” Dimon predicts? That depends on:
1️⃣ Whether the US government reins in deficits and restores fiscal sustainability;
2️⃣ Whether further rises in long-term yields trigger broader rebalancing and credit risk premiums.
In the short term, Treasuries remain the go-to safe haven. Longer term, credit risk premiums could become the new focus for investors.
