In a dramatic Group C finale at the Club World Cup on June 25 (Beijing time), New Zealand's Auckland City stunned South American giants Boca Juniors with a 1-1 draw. Despite both teams being eliminated, Auckland’s incredible performance stole the spotlight.

Auckland City, the lowest-valued team among the 32 Club World Cup participants (€4.58M), fielded mostly semi-professional players. Boca, meanwhile, came with a €100M squad loaded with experience and pedigree.

In the 26th minute, Boca took the lead after a corner led to a chaotic goal—Dilorro's header hit the crossbar, rebounded off the goalkeeper, and went in. It was eventually ruled an own goal.

But unlike their previous two matches, where Auckland conceded 17 goals in total, this time they stood firm. In the 52nd minute, they earned a corner and defender Gray headed in Auckland’s first-ever Club World Cup goal, sending the bench and fans into raptures.

The match was paused for nearly an hour due to severe weather. After resumption, Boca had another goal disallowed for handball. The game ended 1-1.

While Benfica and Bayern Munich topped Group C to advance, Auckland City ended with 1 draw, 2 losses, 1 goal scored, and 17 conceded. Statistically bottom of the group, yet emotionally triumphant—Auckland celebrated post-match with unrestrained joy, winning hearts with their spirit and resolve.
