On the evening of July 1, Chinese tennis player Wang Xinyu delivered a surprise victory in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon women’s singles, defeating the 15th seed Karolína Muchova in straight sets (7-5, 6-1). With this win, she not only advanced to the second round but also secured 70 ranking points and £99,000 in prize money (approximately ¥970,000), marking the first victory for Team China at this year’s tournament.

After a slow start to the season with frequent first-round exits, Wang Xinyu found her rhythm on grass. Her breakthrough at the Berlin Open—where she defeated multiple Top 20 players and reached her first WTA final—boosted her confidence. At Wimbledon, she continued that momentum. Facing an injured Muchova, whose backhand lacked power, Wang took full control with aggressive returns and tactical shot-making.

The first set was tightly contested, with both players holding serve until 5-5. Wang then broke serve and closed the set 7-5. In the second set, she raced to a 4-0 lead and wrapped it up 6-1, dominating the match.

Adding to Wang’s advantage, the top seed in her section, Jessica Pegula, suffered a shocking upset, losing to world No.116 Elisabetta Cocciaretto. With Pegula out, the path to the round of 16 has opened up, giving Wang a great chance to match—or even surpass—her career-best Grand Slam result.
