According to recent reports, Sony will roll out a major upgrade for the PS5 Pro in early 2026, introducing a customized version of AMD’s next-generation upscaling technology, FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4).

PS5 Pro Embraces AI Graphics Era with Custom FSR4 Integration

Currently, the PS5 Pro uses PSSR (PlayStation Super Resolution), an AI-based upscaling solution co-developed with AMD, capable of scaling lower-resolution images to 4K while maintaining image quality and performance. The upcoming FSR4 integration marks a major leap forward, delivering a fully customized, high-performance version designed specifically for console hardware.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 series, revealed that this upgrade is part of Sony and AMD’s ongoing “Project Amethyst,” which began in 2023. The project aims to push visual fidelity using machine learning (ML) and convolutional neural networks (CNN), tailored to the unique constraints and potential of console systems.

Not Just a Port: A Full-Blooded, Console-Optimized FSR4

Cerny emphasized that the FSR4 version on PS5 Pro is not a downscaled PC port. Instead, it’s a deeply optimized, console-first build created through close collaboration with AMD. The technology still uses the core “render low, upscale with AI” approach, allowing higher frame rates and resolution without sacrificing visual detail.

That said, Sony has yet to confirm whether frame generation (as seen in NVIDIA DLSS 3) will be part of this custom implementation.

PC FSR4 Also Getting an AI Overhaul

In parallel, AMD plans to upgrade the PC version of FSR4 later this year. This update will bring advanced AI enhancements, including Neural Radiance Caching (NRC), Ray Reconstruction (RR), and Frame Generation (FG), signaling a broader shift toward neural rendering across platforms.
