Trump Accuses Putin of Failing to Honor Peace Commitments, 50-Day Countdown Begins
On July 15, President Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not fulfilled his repeated claims of wanting peace. Trump reaffirmed his 50-day deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine or face severe U.S. sanctions. The Kremlin has not directly responded but reiterated its openness to a third round of peace talks.
Trump Questions Putin’s Peace Intentions as 50-Day Deadline Ticks Down
U.S. President Donald Trump on July 15 publicly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of not living up to his past statements about wanting peace. “Putin has said it many times, but we haven’t seen him follow through,” Trump told reporters.
Trump reaffirmed his warning that if Russia and Ukraine fail to reach a peace agreement within 50 days, the U.S. will impose harsh economic sanctions, including 100% tariffs and potential secondary sanctions on countries buying Russian oil.
Major Announcement Targets Russia with Economic Pressure
A day earlier, Trump met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House Oval Office and unveiled what he called a “major statement” on Russia. The White House later clarified that Trump’s plan includes 100% tariffs on Russian goods and additional penalties on countries continuing energy trade with Moscow.
Though details on the secondary tariffs remain vague, the move signals Washington’s intent to apply multilateral pressure on Russia while indirectly targeting its energy-dependent trade partners.
Russia Not Reacting to Trump’s Comments, Reaffirms Openness to Talks
In response to Trump’s remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated during a July 14 press briefing that the statement “contains serious elements, including personal references to the President.” He added that Moscow needs time to assess the implications.
Peskov reiterated Russia’s willingness to hold a third round of negotiations with Ukraine, stating, “If Kyiv sends a signal, we are ready to engage immediately.” However, he noted that no formal proposal has yet been received from the Ukrainian side.
Peskov also acknowledged that the U.S. and Europe appear eager for talks to resume, but blamed Kyiv’s continued silence as the primary obstacle.
