Fall of a Crypto Empire: TerraUSD Founder Do Kwon Pleads Guilty in New York, Faces Up to 25 Years in Prison

After more than two years on the run and a series of international legal battles, Do Kwon, the 33-year-old founder of the collapsed algorithmic stablecoin TerraUSD (UST), has pleaded guilty in a New York federal court to two counts of fraud. This marks a major turning point in the judicial aftermath of one of the most devastating events in cryptocurrency history.
From Billion-Dollar Empire to Collapse in Five Days
Do Kwon created TerraUSD and its sister token Luna, attracting hundreds of thousands of investors worldwide with the promise of a 20% annual deposit yield. Unlike traditional stablecoins backed by fiat currency or tangible assets, TerraUSD relied on a “dual-token” mechanism and market arbitrage to maintain its $1 peg.
In May 2022, UST lost its peg, triggering a “death spiral” in which Luna’s price plunged from $80 to near zero in just five days, and UST never recovered. The collapse wiped out more than $40 billion in market value, ended the previous crypto bull market, and pushed Bitcoin from $69,000 to $16,000 within a year.
Flight and Arrest
Following the crash, Do Kwon became the subject of an international manhunt. In March 2023, he was arrested in Montenegro while attempting to board a private jet to the UAE using a fake passport. After failing to secure extradition to South Korea for a potentially lighter sentence, he was handed over to U.S. authorities in late 2024.
Courtroom Guilty Plea in Exchange for Reduced Sentence
In court, wearing handcuffs and shackles, Do Kwon said:
“I knowingly conspired with others to defraud cryptocurrency investors. My actions were wrong, and I take full responsibility.”
He admitted that during a 2021 depegging incident, he falsely claimed UST could restore its peg automatically, when in fact it was propped up by purchases from an external trading firm.
Under a plea deal, Do Kwon pleaded guilty to conspiracy and wire fraud charges, with prosecutors dropping seven other counts. Prosecutors will recommend a sentence of no more than 12 years, although the judge may impose up to 25 years. He also agreed to forfeit $19 million in illicit gains and could be transferred to South Korea to serve the remainder of his sentence after serving at least half in the U.S., subject to eligibility.
Sentencing Date Set
The sentencing is scheduled for December 11, 2025, marking the final legal chapter for a figure once hailed as a pioneer in crypto innovation.
