August 25, 2025 – SpaceX announced today that it has postponed the 10th integrated test flight of Starship (Flight 10) due to a ground systems malfunction. The delay marks yet another adjustment in the program’s ambitious launch schedule.

The test flight was originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on August 24 (7:30 a.m. Beijing time on August 25), from the Starbase facility in Texas. The mission would be carried out by the Block 2 variant pairing of Booster 16 and Ship 37, standing 120 meters tall.

Mission Objectives

Flight 10 was designed to attempt several critical milestones:

  • Stage separation between the booster and upper stage;
  • Deployment of eight Starlink mass simulators by the Starship upper stage, followed by an in-space restart of the Raptor engines;
  • A controlled splashdown of the upper stage in the Indian Ocean;
  • A controlled booster landing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Background

Since 2023, SpaceX has conducted nine Starship test flights, achieving partial milestones such as stage recovery and engine ignition, but not yet completing a full launch–orbit–recovery cycle.

  • Flight 9 (May 27, 2025): the upper stage disintegrated 45 minutes into flight.
  • June 18, 2025: Ship 36, originally intended for Flight 10, exploded during a static fire test, damaging launch infrastructure.
  • So far: SpaceX has demonstrated multiple successful recoveries and refurbishments of Super Heavy boosters using its “Mechazilla” arms, though overall system reliability still requires validation.

Looking Ahead

Despite the delay, Flight 10 remains a crucial milestone. If successful, it will validate satellite deployment, engine restart in space, and dual recovery operations, strengthening SpaceX’s roadmap for deep space exploration, satellite networking, and future lunar missions.
