August 31 – Fast Technology News — A recent study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology has sparked intense discussion across the medical community. The research delivers a clear warning: doctors who rely heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) assistance may experience a rapid decline in their independent diagnostic skills.

A Groundbreaking Multicenter Investigation

The study, a collaboration among several European institutions, was primarily conducted in four endoscopy centers in Poland as part of the Artificial Intelligence for Colorectal Cancer Prevention (ACCEPT) trial. Researchers analyzed 2,177 colonoscopy procedures performed between September 2021 and March 2022 by 19 highly experienced endoscopists—each with over 2,000 prior procedures under their belt. Among these cases, 1,433 were performed without AI assistance.

Colonoscopy remains a vital tool for detecting and removing adenomas, significantly reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. Previous studies have shown that AI assistance can improve adenoma detection rates (ADR) and lower cancer risk.

Testing the True Impact of AI

To understand AI’s effect on physician skills, the team compared procedure quality during the three months before AI implementation and the three months after. All colonoscopies—both with and without AI—were performed in a randomized manner.

In the non-AI-assisted group, 795 procedures were completed before AI adoption, while 648 took place afterward. The results were striking:

  • Before AI adoption: ADR stood at approximately 28.4% (226 out of 795).
  • Three months after AI adoption (without AI assistance): ADR dropped to 22.4% (145 out of 648)—a relative decrease of 20% and an absolute decrease of 6%.

These findings suggest that while AI can boost detection rates when used, doctors’ diagnostic performance may actually decline when the technology is removed.

The “Google Maps Effect” in Medicine

Researchers attribute this phenomenon to a subtle behavioral shift: long-term AI reliance may reduce a physician’s initiative, focus, and sense of responsibility. Without AI, their confidence in their own diagnostic judgments weakens—ultimately impacting performance.

The team dubbed this the “Google Maps effect”—just as habitual GPS users may lose their sense of direction when navigating without it.

A Reality Check for AI Optimism

This outcome contrasts sharply with the optimism of figures like DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who has predicted that “all diseases will be cured within the next decade,” and with advocates who believe AI could be the key to conquering cancer.

Rethinking AI’s Role in Healthcare

The findings raise urgent questions: as AI rapidly integrates into medical practice, how can we prevent over-reliance and ensure doctors’ skills remain sharp?
