Facing setbacks in their foreign signings, Shanxi Loongs have turned to a new option. According to Chinese basketball insider Zhao Tanchang, 29-year-old forward Justin Simon has arrived in Taiyuan, joined team practice, and is expected to finalize a deal with the club.

Standing at 1.96 meters, Simon is a versatile player known for his defensive prowess. He has played in Australia’s NBL, Germany’s Bundesliga, and the FIBA Europe Champions League, earning titles such as NBL Defensive Player of the Year, Bundesliga Defensive Player of the Year, and multiple steals leader honors. His reputation as a defensive anchor is well established.

However, Shanxi’s biggest need lies on the offensive end. Last season, the scoring firepower of Goodwin and Diallo—both averaging 20+ points with frequent 30+ performances—was crucial to the team’s run to the CBA semifinals. Compared to those elite scorers, Simon is not a go-to isolation scorer, but rather a team-oriented piece.

With CBA foreign player rules now relaxed and rivals like Guangdong, Shanghai, and Beijing heavily reinforcing their rosters, Shanxi may struggle to keep pace if they cannot upgrade their offensive imports. Whether Simon is a short-term stopgap or a genuine cornerstone remains to be seen.
