On September 28, Spanish outlet Marca published a scathing review of Real Madrid’s shocking 2-5 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the derby. The article stressed that the loss was not about a lack of talent, but about the team completely abandoning the values that once defined their success: intensity, pressing, discipline, and soul.
At Atlético’s home ground, Real Madrid once again appeared timid, eventually suffering what the media described as a “historic humiliation.” Although Xabi Alonso and Dani Carvajal tried to frame the defeat as a learning opportunity, Marca insisted that the underlying issues are far more serious.
The criticism mainly targeted Madrid’s defensive collapse:
- Center-backs and Tchouaméni were passive in aerial duels;
- Carreras underperformed;
- Valverde, whose form has been flat all season, looked utterly lost.
Still, Marca dismissed the idea that this Real Madrid squad “isn’t good enough,” pointing out that the team boasts an extraordinary roster and immense talent. However, this derby was a harsh reminder that carrying the same careless attitude from last season will only lead to more disasters.
Atlético showcased something beyond tactics or training drills—it was pure spirit and fighting mentality, something Real Madrid desperately needs to rediscover if they want to reclaim their identity.
