On October 8 (local time), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi for their groundbreaking work in the development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs).
The trio will share the 11 million Swedish kronor prize (≈ RMB 8.36 million).
Their discoveries revolutionized chemistry by combining precision molecular design with structural engineering. MOFs—lightweight, porous materials with extraordinary flexibility—are now vital in gas storage, catalysis, carbon capture, and drug delivery, shaping the next generation of sustainable materials.
🧬 Chemistry: The “Science of Everything”
Since 1901, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded 116 times—and it has often transcended chemistry itself. From frozen electron microscopy to AI-driven protein prediction, Nobel chemistry has long celebrated the intersection of disciplines.
Recent years highlight this perfectly:
- 2024: AI and biology unite to decode the structure of life’s proteins.
- 2020: Gene editing revolutionizes medicine.
- 2017: Cryo-electron microscopy transforms molecular imaging.
The 2025 award continues this legacy, bridging structure and innovation, and proving that chemistry is the ultimate connector of sciences.
🔬 Chemistry in Daily Life: The Science Behind the Ordinary
From the synthetic indigo that colored your denim jeans to polymer chemistry that made plastics ubiquitous, chemistry silently powers modern civilization.
It fuels the batteries in our devices, the medicines we take, and even the materials that build our cities.
As Nobel Laureate Louis Ignarro once said:
“A scientific discovery worthy of a Nobel Prize should not stay in the lab — it should benefit humanity.”
