Behind this meteoric rise lies an AI arms race fueled by raw computing power — with plans to deploy 20 gigawatts of compute, equivalent to 20 nuclear reactors, and an astonishing $1 trillion in total investment. But the question remains: where will the money come from?

In 2024, OpenAI generated around $4 billion in revenue and was valued at $157 billion. Fast forward to 2025 — its first-half revenue reached $4.3 billion, with full-year projections of $13 billion, yet its valuation soared to $500 billion. This now places OpenAI above SpaceX as the world’s most valuable private company — and it has become the money tree of Silicon Valley. Every major tech firm and investor on Wall Street has their eyes locked on OpenAI. Anything remotely connected to the company — from partnerships to chip deals — can send stock prices skyrocketing overnight.

OpenAI’s ambition is colossal. To power its ever-growing AI models, it plans to deploy 20 GW of compute infrastructure, equivalent to the total output of 20 nuclear power plants. Each model training session, inference, and ChatGPT conversation demands immense computing resources — and OpenAI is racing to secure enough energy and GPUs to keep up. Partners like NVIDIA, AMD, Oracle, and CoreWeave are all part of this monumental effort. To put it simply: 1 GW of AI compute costs about $50 billion. 20 GW × $50 billion = $1 trillion. It’s a staggering figure — one that dwarfs the GDP of many nations.

OpenAI isn’t alone in this high-stakes game. The entire tech world is building “AI power plants”: Meta’s Hyperion ($100–500 billion, 5 GW), xAI’s Colossus ($30 billion, 300 MW), Amazon’s Project Rainier ($11 billion, 2.2 GW), and Microsoft’s Fairwater ($7.3 billion, capacity undisclosed). According to Sherwood Research, global AI data center investment will near $700 billion by 2029. For OpenAI and its partners, that means millions of GPUs — and unimaginable power demands.

To fund this trillion-dollar dream, Silicon Valley reinvented its own playbook — a form of high-tech financial wizardry built on circular investment. As DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria noted, “OpenAI isn’t financially equipped to make such promises,” estimating $10 billion in annual losses. So how does a loss-making company attract over $1 trillion in commitments? By turning its suppliers and investors into one.

NVIDIA’s deals with OpenAI are rumored to be worth $500 billion, yet NVIDIA itself plans to invest $100 billion back into OpenAI. In effect, OpenAI buys NVIDIA’s chips with NVIDIA’s own money, boosting NVIDIA’s revenue and share price in a perfect feedback loop. AMD took an even bolder route — offering stock warrants instead of cash. If OpenAI hits certain milestones, it can buy up to 10% of AMD shares for just $0.01 each. At AMD’s current price of ~$204 per share, that’s tens of billions in potential value — a breathtakingly clever financial structure.

Oracle and CoreWeave have inked massive infrastructure deals worth $300 billion and $22 billion respectively. Once announced, Oracle’s market cap surged $244 billion overnight, and AMD’s rose $63 billion. These interlinked investments — OpenAI ordering chips and compute from its own investors — have created an AI valuation bubble sustained by cross-financing and mutual hype. Beyond OpenAI, NVIDIA has invested heavily across the ecosystem — including xAI’s record $20 billion funding round, even pledging GPUs as collateral. GPUs have truly become the new currency of the AI era.

In January, OpenAI joined forces with SoftBank and Oracle to launch the “Stargate” project, a $500 billion plan to build next-generation AI infrastructure in the U.S. Meanwhile, the company continues raising money through loans and debt: $4 billion in bank loans, $47 billion in venture capital (much of it tied to Microsoft negotiations), and a new multi-billion-dollar debt round reportedly in the works.

When questioned about the company’s losses, CEO Sam Altman shrugged: “Profitability isn’t one of my top ten priorities right now.” Instead, he’s betting everything on the long game — that AI adoption will grow exponentially, fueling OpenAI’s revenue far beyond today’s $12 billion base. With 800 million monthly active users, the potential is massive. Yet the risk is equally enormous: if AI growth slows, the trillion-dollar bubble could deflate just as fast as it inflated.

As one veteran investor put it: “OpenAI’s capital intensity exceeds anything in tech history — even Google or Microsoft — and it still hasn’t learned cost discipline.” Will this trillion-dollar gamble forge the greatest tech empire of the century, or will it become the most spectacular bubble Silicon Valley has ever seen?
