Portugal’s True Hero Wasn’t Ronaldo – It Was This 22-Year-Old Left-Back! Nuno Mendes Claims 2 MVPs and Crushes Yamal

On June 9 (Beijing time), Portugal lifted the UEFA Nations League trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Spain. While Cristiano Ronaldo scored in two consecutive matches, it was 22-year-old left-back Nuno Mendes who stole the spotlight.

Mendes was named Final MVP and also took home the Player of the Tournament award. As he raised the trophy, fans erupted in cheers, with coach Roberto Martínez and teammates, including Ronaldo, applauding him proudly.

In the semifinal against Germany, Mendes had already been Portugal’s key player. His blistering runs down the left flank led to a crucial assist for Ronaldo’s goal. Defenders could only watch as Mendes surged past them.

Against Spain, he was nothing short of unstoppable. In defense, he completely shut down 17-year-old Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal, who endured possibly the worst match of his young career.

Offensively, Mendes was a constant threat. In the 26th minute, he cut inside the box and scored from a tight angle to level the score 1-1. Fans were reminded of a prime Gareth Bale.

In the second half, he outpaced Yamal again and delivered a pinpoint cross amid triple marking, which Ronaldo converted to make it 2-2.

In extra time, Mendes made another powerful run and was brought down in the box, but no penalty was awarded. In the shootout, he calmly netted Portugal’s fourth penalty.

His final stats: 1 goal, 1 indirect assist, 3 tackles, 4 dribbles (match-high), 7 ball recoveries – a performance worthy of both MVPs.
