Kyrie Irving Declines $43M Option, Signs 3-Year, $119M Extension with Mavericks – Trio of No.1 Picks Aim for Title Run

On June 25 (Beijing time), NBA insider Shams reported that Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has declined his $43 million player option for the 2025-26 season and will instead sign a three-year, $119 million contract extension with the team. The final year of the new deal (2027-28) will include a player option.

Irving and his agent Riley Irving reached a swift agreement with the Mavericks' front office, affirming Kyrie’s long-term commitment to Dallas. Although earlier reports by Marc Stein suggested uncertainty regarding Irving’s future in Dallas, the All-Star guard ultimately chose to bypass free agency and secure a long-term deal.

Despite a season-ending ACL injury in his left knee, Irving appeared in 50 games this season, averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. He shot 47.3% from the field, 40.1% from beyond the arc, and an elite 91.6% from the free-throw line.

Irving’s extension signals the Mavericks’ clear vision going forward. The team is expected to select Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No.1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. Alongside Irving and newly-acquired Anthony Davis, Dallas will boast a core of three former No.1 overall picks aiming to contend for an NBA championship.

The Mavericks ended the 2024-25 season with a 39-43 record, finishing 10th in the Western Conference and missing the playoffs. With this revamped trio, Dallas is positioning itself as a formidable title contender next season.
