Beijing, Sept 27 — Italian tennis star Lorenzo Musetti has sparked widespread controversy at the China Open after allegedly insulting Chinese fans during his singles match.
The incident unfolded in the second-set tiebreak, when Musetti, distracted by a spectator’s cough, made a forehand error. Frustrated, he lashed out in Italian, cursing “the Chinese” — despite the fact that witnesses confirmed the noise came from French fans supporting his opponent.
The reaction has been particularly bitter, as Musetti had enjoyed immense popularity in China, admired not only for his playing style but also his charisma. Many spectators stressed that Chinese fans were highly respectful and overwhelmingly supportive of Musetti throughout the match:
“The Chinese audience showed excellent manners. Almost everyone was cheering for him, yet he turned around and insulted the very people supporting him.”
Fans and commentators worldwide condemned the outburst, calling it disrespectful and discriminatory:
